They were joined by Peter Moyes the Royal Life Saving Society’s UK National President who travelled from his home in Nottingham, Cllr Phillip Circus, Chairman of Horsham DC and a number of other invited guests, including ex member Emily Darbyshire who was struck down with meningitis and who the club is helping to support through ‘Emily’s Trust. All the guests assisted in presenting members with a wide range of lifesaving proficiency qualifications, cups, medals and certificates.

Voting on the evening for the Club Member of the Year proved in favour of James Cossons who earlier this year received a Certificate of Merit in London at the National Honours Award Ceremony. The RLSS President kindly re-presented their certificates to all 8 members who had received National Recognition in 2013. James proposed the Vote of Thanks to all the guests at the end of the evening.

The Special Achievement Cup went to Brendan Clery who had made significant progress in his swimming, communication and inter-personnel skills.

Cups and medals were awarded to those who were successful in the Club’s annual internal competitions and to those members who competed and were successful in Regional & National Competitions.

Cllr Circus and The RLSS National President, Peter Moyes both congratulated the club members and highlighted their considerable achievements throughout 2013.

Particular mention was made of the 196 exam passes in the new Survive & Save syllabus and the additional 112 qualifications in related water safety and lifesaving activities, many of the latter embracing water safety awareness sessions with Beaver, Rainbow, Brownie and Pilot Youth Groups.

Certificates of Achievement were presented to each of the Volunteer Instructors who between them had delivered something in excess of 500 hours tuition to those achieving qualifications.

The RLSS UK President drew particular attention to the continuing need to teach people the skills contained in the Survive & Save syllabus.

The last annual figures collated recorded over 300 deaths through drowning and many of these were in the age range that Horsham Life Saving Club cater for.

The 2013 fine summer had seen 6 unnecessary drowning deaths in a one week period and he said the courses the Horsham club provide can help to reduce the risk of this happening to people in this community. Details of the courses can be found on the club website horshamlifesavingclub.co.uk or an Information Sheet and Application Form can be found near the club notice board in The Pavilions foyer.
