How long with bonfire tradition last?

I READ with much dismay that the Battle Bonfire celebrations were being cancelled with a token fire on the Abbey Green the only symbol of previous years.

I have been a resident of Battle all my life and have enjoyed the celebrations since I was a child when I would sit on my father’s shoulders to observe the celebrations.

I understand why the bonfire is not being held on the field in Powdermill Lane so why isn’t the bonfire reinstated to the Abbey Green, which in my opinion is where is should still be held.

I don’t know who changed the location but the atmosphere is not the same now.

Almost every year we have family and friends join us to enjoy the evening but this year we have told them not to come.

Another loss to the towns traditions, how long before it’s cancelled altogether?
