How much?

I WAS delighted to read that two fraudsters are now being prosecuted for stealing £100,000 in benefits over 10 years (Gazette, April 30).

However, what really horrified me was that Arun District Council had handed over such a vast sum in the first place, and now smugly announces its satisfaction that the miscreants have been caught.

The most serious offender will now go to prison at our expense, we will not get our money back and Arun thinks it has done a good job.

I am appalled that anyone, whatever their circumstances, can claim such a vast amount of money at a time when the rest of us have to struggle to pay our bills and taxes.

The real criminal in this case is the system or our incompetent council, which does not check the credentials of its beneficiaries over 10 years.

But we will never get a satisfactory answer and just await a further example of Arun's ineptitude.

Investigations need to be put in place.
