How should new cycle paths be paid for – and who should foot the bill?

Whilst I envy everyone who can cycle and think it excellent, I haven’t tried it for at least 70 years and think it would not be ideal at 82, though I am fit enough to walk and swim quite fast!

However, I feel with the pressure to provide more cycling paths and the introduction of fast electric bikes etc., that it would not be unreasonable to suggest that cyclists should pay some form of small tax which would go directly to the maintenance of roads.

Although I know there are some unreasonable motorists, there are an equal number of cyclists who take enormous risks by straddling roads, using pavements and if they are in any kind of trouble, usually accuse the motorists!
