Hunt for happy memories

I REMEMBER coming to Littlehampton on a couple of school trips when I was about seven or eight, in 1947/8, and having afternoon tea in a building which I'm sure I remember was on The Green '“ I don't recall having to cross a road to get to it.

We used to get a sandwich, cake and a glass of orange '“ we'd already eaten any food we brought with us at lunchtime.

The building was a low, dark place, which I think was mainly wood.

It must have had doors, but it was open right across the front and back, and had long benches parallel with the beach to eat at.

The funfair was next to it, and we'd manage a ride or two and all our pennies went into the slot machines.

Someone told me recently that it used to belong to Butlins, is that right?

The first thing we were told on arriving in Littlehampton was not to go in the sea near the river, as it was dangerous.

Has anyone got photos of the front at that time?

Who would have thought that 30 years later, I'd move here from London and now feel I'm almost a local.
