Growing up in the 1950s Alexandra Park was a beautiful place to visit with your friends especially as it was free and pocket money was tight.

I remember regularly playing football on the first lawn in front of the war memorial with our coats put down as goal posts.

Also, if my grandad was with me he would treat me to half-an-hour rowing or canoeing on the boating lake.

Boats were hired out by a gent named Bob.

You could also visit the working steam engine house in the second park.

I am very interested in the proposed cycle way through the park.

Cycling was not allowed in the 1950s.

It was strictly enforced by the park inspector who used to regularly patrol up and down the park complete with uniform and peaked cap.

From memory we used to call him Pan Face.

I would like to add that I still have a couple of cycles but due to my advancing age do not use them as much as I should.

I do hope it all works out well for walkers and cyclists, especially with small children running around in the park!
