Innovative venture that will be a source of joy

HAVING been involved in the Shifting Sands conference at Littlehampton in 2007, which considered the important role that good design has on the rejuvenation of the English seaside, and at which the Longest Bench was first aired to the public by the designers, I am delighted to see it actually emerge from an idea into a reality.

It is an exciting, innovative venture for Littlehampton and I am sure that not only will it be a source of joy to those of us who like to take regular walks along the seafront, but it will also attract more, much-needed visitors to the town.

Both past and present mayors of London frequently say how vital creativity is to the economy of the city, and I'm sure it can work for us, too.

I would also like to convey a huge vote of thanks to Gordon Roddick and his family for so generously supporting the development of the Longest Bench, and when it is in place, I am sure it will be a fitting tribute to Dame Anita, who was always such an enthusiastic champion of innovation.
