I have to confess to being irritated by Annemarie Field’s opinion “Golf course reclaimed for walkers” (Eastbourne Herald printed edition November 6).

The Royal Eastbourne Golf course is on private land and members pay £100,000 annually to rent it from the Duke of Devonshire.

They pay considerably more for the small army of full time greenkeepers to maintain the land in good condition.

Perhaps if Annemarie wishes to “reclaim” the land she might like to contribute to the very substantial costs.

Even better has she considered joining the golf club ?

There is a lovely opportunity for gentle exercise in a delightful outdoor setting.

Plus, in non-Covid times the ability to attend numerous social functions at the clubhouse in a convivial atmosphere.

Finally immediately adjacent to the golf club are acres and acres of South Downs National Park as a more suitable alternative for walkers to enjoy.
