The people had been consulted on the kind of country they wanted and their place in it.

Over the years and particularly the last three decades, the people’s consensus was attacked, eroded and rolled back by vested interests demanding ever greater autonomy.

Intensive lobbying led to a steep rise in immigration - as a source of cheap labour - and widespread foreign ownership and control of British companies and utilities.

The result is a long-term fall in real wages and living standards, and a massive outflow of resources abroad - corporate welfare transfer.

Matters were inflamed by intellectuals and fanatics of the racist right who conflated capitalism’s ruthlessness and greed with the colour of people’s skin.

Inevitably, a tipping point is reached in such situations.

No one had consulted us on the profound changes taking place, affecting out way of life, our culture, identity and even language.

It came as no surprise during the EU referendum campaign to hear everywhere the refrain, ‘we want our country back’.

Suddenly, the referendum had become a popular voice and means for change.

The metropolitan elite had been caught cold.

The backlash has been tremendous with organised demonstrations and petitions, legal challenges, calls for a second referendum, and so on.

Is our breaking the power of Brussels as significant as the dissolution of the monasteries when Henry VIII broke the power of Rome?

Just one more thing; beware Theresa May.
