It is time to run our own affairs

In the last few days we have heard some persuasive arguments from the Tory ministers on the EU.

On June 23 the people of the United Kingdom will have the chance to decide the destiny of our great country.

Do we stay in or stay out?

I have no doubt in my mind, having considered the arguments on both sides, that we would better to sever our ties with the European project. In their hearts I believe the British public want less of Europe and more of Britain.

By restoring the British values of democracy and self-determination, which date back to the Magna Carta, I believe Britain will be a stronger, more secure and more prosperous country.

Otherwise the European Commission and Court will continue to have the powers to interfere in our way of life.

The EU is an institution which appears unable to reform itself, and is rooted in the past. I see no hope that it will be any better in the future.

It is run by unelected bureaucrats who have the power to change huge swathes of law, and prevents us being able to choose who makes critical decisions which affect all our lives.

Are we not a sovereign country where decisions should be made in Britain?

One of the main arguments for staying in is said to be we would be better off as we would have full access to the free trade single market.

I think it is forgotten we are now in a global market and able to seek and secure new trading opportunities with the new developing nations such as India, China and Brazil and other global trading nations.

We export now more to non-EU countries than to the EU. As for the EU’s economic record, the Euro has inflicted an appalling economic crisis on its member states as we have seen with Greece.

One size does not fit all. The best decision we ever made was to keep out of the Euro. The home secretary says we would be more secure if we remained in the EU.

Despite the cuts, our Armed Forces remain a formidable military power, respected throughout the world.

We would continue to stand side by side with our close ally the US in NATO.

The open border policy of the EU that we have endured has been the cause of millions of refugees flooding into Europe from the war torn countries of the Middle East.

It has shown how easy it is for terrorists to infiltrate to cause mayhem, Paris and Tunisia being examples.

We have to have tighter border control. The EU appears incapable of controlling immigration.

Having had so many ludicrous directives emanating from the EU over the years surely it is time to run our own affairs, and cease such interference for Brussels. Whichever way one looks at the arguments it seems to me there is only one course to take, and that is to leave the EU.
