Just thoughts...

WAY back in the 1950s, as a very young man, I served on Ferring Parish Council. Being in my early 20s, I found that the next youngest councillor was more than three times my age.

The council spent many hours over many weeks and months discussing the pros and cons of an inter-village road, linking Ferring with East Preston. A senior councillor, Group Captain Baldwin (known as Bigger Banger Baldwin!) led the debates about plan 11 or 12 or 13.

Eventually, a road from Ferring War Memorial was built, heading west, but only as the entrance to a necessary housing estate.

Imagine how that road would be used now, if it had crossed the brooks and linked with East Preston. The A259 is badly choked especially with the ASDA roadworks and with the Roundstone level crossing scheduled to be closed for a couple of weeks.

On reflection, I think dear old “Bigger Banger” was right in leading the opposition to the road. It would have become a real “rat-run”, but very useful at the present time.

Just thoughts of an old man!!
