Lack of attachment

Previously, I have written to highlight the problem of our town council being dominated by people who do not have a strong connection with our town, as illustrated by the council’s planning and transportation, which has a chairman, John Charles, who lives in Felpham and another committee member who lives in Rustington.

As Mr Dunne has illustrated, Conservative councillors locally are not really interested in helping town residents with their concerns, even in these worrying times.

I was under the impression that the reason for the change made to the start time for committee meetings from 6.30pm to 7pm for the planning and transportation committee (but no other committee) by the Conservative-controlled town council was due to a clash with a regular meeting of Arun Conservative councillors.

However, at Thursday’s meeting of the full council, Mr Charles advised that the reason for the change to a later start time was in fact due to the employment hours of one of the committee members (councillor Jill Long).

Such brazen arrogance!

The committee, comprising all Conservative councillors, only considered themselves and did not consider the effect on town residents.

It is worrying when elected representatives seem not to have the time to serve their residents and do the job that is expected of them, more so given that they receive allowances.

I agree with Mr Dunne’s assessment that town residents are being short-changed by Conservative councillors who show a lack of respect towards residents locally who raise concerns that then receive no action.

It’s not what residents deserve, but, unfortunately, it’s what they should expect when voting into office people who do not have a strong attachment to the town and its residents.
