Lecture at Christ’s Hospital on medical modelling

A lecture by Dr Stephen Payne held at Christ’s Hospital on April 30 focused on two main areas of medical modelling - treating liver cancer and helping doctors decide whether to treat stroke victims.

It was attended by 60 Christ’s Hospital students from UF to Grecians (Year 10-13) who enjoyed seeing how engineering and medicine can cooperate, they engaged well with the topic and extended the questioning to 20 minutes with insightful and interesting comments.

Stephen Payne studied engineering at Trinity College Oxford for both his masters and doctorate, where he was also the organ scholar.

He then began to teach, at various Oxford Colleges, and is now at Keble College as a tutorial fellow and Dean.

He also lectures in bioengineering and runs the PUMMA (physiological understanding through modelling) research group, which specialises in using engineering tools in order to provide doctors with useful information in a number of clinical areas, so that they can make better diagnoses and decisions about treatment.
