Legacy of debt

WHEN originally conceived, the plan to build a storage area for East Preston Village Hall was a good idea and would have benefited all residents.

Over the last three years control of the project has slowly been taken over from the Village Hall Foundation by the parish council.

The need for a parish clerk's office was a legitimate one, but the council insisted on turning the project into a complex including meeting rooms and other areas under their jurisdiction.

They will now control more than 70 per cent of the new building on charity land, designated for recreational and leisure purposes.

The council has stated in the past that the outlay (now 1m, including interest) is justified because it is council money paying for the project.

It is in fact the council tax payers of East Preston paying for this over the next 25 years.

I will be 65 next birthday and am not looking forward to paying for this until I am 90 years of age.

By this time most, or all, of the current parish councillors will be long gone, leaving a legacy that so many people in East Preston say they do not want.
