Lemming-like Tory councillors

LONDON, ENGLAND - MAY 24: Dominic Cummings, special adviser to the prime minister, leaves 10 Downing Street on May 24, 2020 in London, England. On March 31st 2020 Downing Street confirmed to journalists that Dominic Cummings was self-isolating with COVID-19 symptoms at his home in North London. Durham police have confirmed that he was actually hundreds of miles away at his parent's house in the city. I was appalled to read that, one after the other like a group of lemmings, our Tory councillors lined up to say they supported Dominic Cummings and would not seek his resignation.

This is not a political issue.

This is an adviser who broke a ruling he had helped to broker, told the press he had driven to Barnard Castle to check his eyesight and whose wife lied in an article she penned for the Spectator.

There are other dubious issues here but we will not go into those.

Any adviser of any shade on the political spectrum from deepest navy to luminous crimson who acted in this way would have aroused anger.

Parliamentarians guilty of less heinous acts in the past behaved decently and quit their posts.

Am I right in that one of the members quoted was partly responsible for the imposition of the Ashdown Forest no-development zone with science so badly researched it led to Wealden’s Local Plan being thrown out by a Government inspector?

And the same man is in charge of East Sussex Fire Authority’s incomprehensible decision to cut back essential services?

I think these councillors must have received a draft briefing, possibly drawn up by Cummings himself, giving them chapter and verse on how to respond when questioned.

They were clearly unable to think for themselves.
