LETTER: A profoundly sensitive issue

The rejection by Parliament of the Assisted Dying Bill means that we can visit our doctors knowing that they are still legally required to be 100 per cent committed to preserving our health and life.

Yet the way that even religious leaders have been divided over the subject indicates that this is a profoundly sensitive and difficult issue.

Had the bill been passed, it could have been the means of answering the prayer of the author of Psalm 39, who just wants God to look away so that [s]he can smile again before [s]he dies. Hard questions remain: those last six months…if they can’t be cut short, can they somehow be made less unbearable? And is there any meaning or purpose in them? Is it right even to ask?
