LETTER: A27 bypass

In the 70s and 80s the plan was to have a Folkestone to Honiton dual carriageway highway.

Up until 1997 it was taking shape.

Locally we had the Brighton bypass from Lewes to Shoreham-by-Sea, improvements at Clapham and the start of the Arundel bypass with Crossbush becoming a quiet cul-de-sac.

Two potential Worthing and Lancing bypass schemes were under consideration but neither would satisfy the local community.

This led to a public enquiry, at the end of which the presiding officer decided upon the best option.

By this time the new Labour Government withdrew the funding, and as a result, the findings were not made public.

With the project again under review it would appear that improvements to the existing route are under investigation rather than a bypass.

More money is now being spent looking at improvements that will only be a short-term solution.

The plans are in place for a bypass, why spend yet more money looking at an alternative?
