LETTER: Aldi is just what Horsham needs

The loss of Waitrose from Horsham town centre cannot be a welcome event to other shops there. Waitrose have established a reputation of a store for top quality products at reasonable prices served by a helpful staff and in a good central position.

The fact that one walks past the other shops of the town to get there brings trade to many other shops. When driving to the new out-of-town shopping estate, this will cease and we can only hope that another supermarket will quickly follow Waitrose on that site to revive a dying town centre.

We now have every type of restaurant imaginable replacing shops which could not afford to continue as people drive to shopping sites. The businesses of Piries Place will be particularly hit without a supermarket bringing shoppers in.

I think that Aldi is just what Horsham needs. I, personally, will be very sad not to have Waitrose for my weekly supply which has been regular for many years but I am not prepared to walk home from an out-of-town site carrying my shopping load.Let us welcome Aldi!
