LETTER: Always do your own homework

Britain's economy is back to pre-Brexit levels despite the immature '˜toys out the pram' post-Brexit paranoia, so its a pity M M Graves relies on attention grabbing headlines to promote the anti-Brexit sentiment rather than studying their background.

Take Fortera (formerly Hanson Brick) which had mothballed those (and other) brickworks in 2010 and 2014 due to economic down-turns in the building industry - long before ‘Brexit’ was conceived. They will reopen.

All businesses, big or small, routinely reassess their markets and strategies to stay afloat, make money and reinvest - but when Big Business and their scare-mongering political mouthpiece, the CBI, makes demands upon the government, it is always in businesses’ interests, not Britain’s.

Many famous British and German companies manufacture in China because its far cheaper and less burdensome than ‘the EU’ (the USA chooses South Korea, outside of NAFTA). Lush Cosmetics manufactures around the world rather than export from Poole, so their leaving the UK in an anti-Brexit fit is insignificant.

Ford demands Britain stays in the EU, yet moved all vehicle production out of the UK. Nissan is not worried about Brexit yet Nissan (UK), run by Renault (20 per cent owned by the French government) demands we stay. Yet, despite us being in the EU, both Renault and Peugeot-Citroen closed their UK plants to manufacture in cheaper EU economies.

Businesses manufacture where they can make the best profit and extract the best tax-payer grants. Renault and Citroen both made cars here pre-EEC to avoid tariffs so, if Britain reciprocated an EU 20 per cent import tariff (that’s 20 per cent on the £6,000 dockside price, not the £24,000 retail price) then Renault will keep Nissan (UK) open for the UK and export markets where post-Brexit Britain has secured a free trade deal outside the EU. That’s business. It makes everyone, apart from Europhiles, happy bunnies.

So, never believe sensationalist media or political propaganda - and always do your own homework.
