LETTER: Arctic ice

BBC’s flagship show Horizon did an in-depth investigation into the current problems with our weather, but I think they missed the main suspect.

During my school days in the 1950s we were taught about the vast wealth underneath the Arctic and this could be a source of wealth for the British.

Since this time the ice has shrunk to less than 50 per cent of its width and companies are now beginning to exploit the Arctic for profit.

The consequences is that the jet stream is meandering about and the UK climate now depends on chance.

I think a full investigation into the cause of this Arctic ice melting is well overdue, because the weather we have now is as a result of this.

We can apply a simple logic to this – if all the Arctic ice melts it will get wetter and we will get more floods.

This problem will affect the US, Canada, Russia and many other nations.

People will be forced to move to higher ground and when the industrialists have received their ill gotten gains from the Arctic they will start on the Antarctic.

Time to understand that we need a planet that can feed everyone, not flood everyone.
