LETTER: Build a bridge over the A27

Having studied the plans and read your correspondence on the proposed IKEA development at New Monks Farm, it is clear that traffic is one of the major associated problems.

The A27 is already a hugely congested road and the extra traffic generated by IKEA, the new housing, school and community centre will inevitably exacerbate this already chronic problem. It is proposed that a new roundabout be built to replace the traffic lights, but it has already been demonstrated that roundabouts and traffic lights are the major cause of the existing hold-ups experienced along the A27.

In my opinion, if this scheme goes ahead, the only way to lessen the problem is to build a bridge over the A27 in place of the roundabout, with long slip roads in both directions to ease traffic from north and south on and off the main road, as happens on motorways.

A similar solution was achieved with minimal disruption to main road traffic at Broadbridge Heath on the A24 two years ago.

Of course this will be more expensive in the short term than a roundabout, but unlike at many of the other notorious pinch points on the A27, it seems that there is room to build this here.

In the long term it could save more than the initial cost in terms of journey times, fuel consumption, pollution and accidents.
