LETTER: Cashing on on higher prices

This letter follows on from a piece submitted by Eduardo Delgado back in December, which concerned the creation of residential apartments from old council offices.

An excellent point was raised from this letter, namely the chance, or rather the lack of, for young people to become first time buyers in the area.

As it is well known and discussed, the national housing crisis has made it immensely difficult to even place a toe on Britain’s property ladder, let alone in the South East.

However, similar to Eduardo’s argument regarding the high proportion of buy to let purchasers of apartments built in old office blocks, what is being done to aid aspiring property owners in the massive housing redevelopments around the county?

Close to me lies the ‘new village’ of Wickhurst Green, which has seen the construction of thousands of new homes in previous years.

While some might argue this is actively diminishing Horsham’s character as a small market town (which I sympathise with), it is also important to consider the national picture of the severe lack of housing.

That said, are these new houses really going to house first-time buyers or people simply replacing their current home? I doubt either is the case proportionally.

One only has to spend a matter of seconds using an internet search engine to see the number of properties that are to let rather than buy in this particular area.

What I would like to know, and I do not doubt many others also, is how the local council plans to protect the interests of its residents in this case and around the county?

Rather than cashing in on the higher prices that large proprietors are willing to pay to exploit locals for hundreds, if not thousands of pounds in rental payments each month.
