LETTER: Dispensations for councillors

Cllr Bailey was obliged to withdraw from Development North Planning committee (7 July) because his home backed onto land that was being considered for development in Rudgwick.

He was not granted a dispensation by the council’s lawyer and was not allowed to take part in the discussions.

Cllrs Vickers and Howard own properties in Southwater on the very edge of land that Berkeley Homes would use if granted permission to build 2,750 homes west of Southwater.

Yet Cllr Vickers was granted a dispensation to speak against 2,750 homes being sited in Southwater at council on 24 June 2015.

Purists may argue that Cllr Vickers has been involved in ‘strategic’ planning whilst Cllr Bailey was barred from taking part in a planning application.

That is indeed a very fine line. I doubt very much whether the public will be convinced of this convenient distinction.
