LETTER: Economic data demolishes claim

Under the headline, ‘Property sales down 15 per cent, but prices up, says Land Registry’ the article states: ‘The number of homes being sold in England and Wales has fallen significantly, according to figures from the Land Registry. In May this year, there were 65,619 transactions in total, a 15 per cent fall on the same month in 2014. However, prices in some property hotspots are still rising by up to 13 per cent a year, due to lack of supply. The number of homes being sold for more than a million pounds dropped dramatically - down by 21 per cent’.

So the evidence of what is actually happening in the market, totally demolishes what the Government and developers claim about the NPPF and housing supply.

Who after all is responsible for the shortage that is driving up prices? In the Horsham District who is sitting on land banks with permission to build 7,000 houses – none of which have been started?

Who is cutting back to the bare minimum the number of affordable houses being built? And what is the Leader of HDC, Cllr Ray Dawe, and his cabinet chums doing about it?

At no time have we seen any attempt by Cllrs Dawe and Vickers (a) to make a market adjustment to their arbitrary housing target; or (b) to challenge the Inspector’s decision to raise the target, in the face of the economic data.

They have let us all down and a number of backbench councillors such as Cllr Adrian Lee (Denne) and Mathew French (Broadbridge Heath) – according to their voting record on the North Horsham Liberty project - continue to fail to challenge Cllr Dawe and Vickers on these crucial points.
