LETTER: Eyes closed to the problem

So, we are still planning to extend Heathrow to two-and-a-half runways or Gatwick to two and closing our eyes and ears to solving the basic problem.

Against whom are we competing? Well, Paris CDG has four runways, Frankfurt has four, and Amsterdam has six. Our proposed extensions won’t even catch them up, so we have to consider now where we shall put our extension-after-next (three-and-a-half for Heathrow or three for Gatwick?) and even that won’t catch them up.

A Thames Estuary airport, first mooted in the 1960s is the only candidate for a four or more runway, noise pollution free, 24-hour usage airport. As Boris Johnson says “As Britain dithers, the rest of the World is getting things done”. We need a modern Lady Houston to shout “Wake Up England”.
