LETTER: Health: we must not be distracted

Despite all the pieces being in place, our local authorities struggle to find a solution to a contractual technicality which is frustrating attempts to provide basic needs for health services in Littlehampton.

Even worse is the fact that Arun District Council and the Clinical Commissioning Group dragged their feet for over two years, failing to establish a surgery in the empty building at Morrisons until after the East Street surgery, originally slated to relocate there, had closed.

I was seriously disappointed to learn at a commissioning group meeting late last year that before the closure of Arun Medical Group the two surgeries now involved with the Morrisons building were in talks about being a part of a new medical facility at the old hospital site in the town, so there is now a major hole in that project.

This would have been a great opportunity to regain ground lost when the previous Strategic Health Authority betrayed our town by withdrawing our new hospital after the old one had been demolished to make way for it.

The health development at the north of town should be a new facility to serve the increase in population of Littlehampton.

It is not a replacement for the surgery in East Street, which should be replaced within the town centre for those patients who were displaced.

We must not be distracted from the bigger picture locally or let those responsible off the hook just because they are struggling with something they should be achieving more easily.
