LETTER: Heart ripped out

In response to your article on the demolition of our town hall, I feel that this is yet another example of the so called democracy by which we are governed.

Every so often we are given the opportunity to vote for a representative in local or national government, who in the majority of cases then makes little or no attempt to find out the wishes of those he or she claims to represent when important decisions are required. As far as I am aware this is the case with the Town Hall and indeed the town centre redevelopment in general. Whilst I suspect that the electorate are not too concerned about minor foibles of our councilors such as petanque facilities, I am sure that they would like to be consulted by means of a local referendum before the heart of our town is ripped out by developers. My own opinion in this matter, having lived in the town for almost 50 years is that the proposition is an act of pure vandalism prompted by the siren song of avaricious developers. The Town Hall and civic centre are probably the most recognisable examples of the original Crawley New Town and the argument that we cannot afford to bring the building up to modern standards simply doesn’t wash when we can waste huge amounts on repeated re development of the town centre and similar vanity projects. So come on Crawley Borough Council, how’s about a little bit of democracy and ask the people who elected you before you bring in the bulldozers.
