LETTER: Ideal setting for affordable homes

Horsham MP Francis Maude in his column in your paper last week suggests the Novartis site should be used for business purposes.

But he doesn’t set out the case for such a use. We know already that there are 250,000sq ft of unused business space in Horsham District and a far greater amount in Crawley, Croydon and Mole Valley. We don’t know in addition how much brown field land there is in the district.

As Chris Morris in his very considered letter to your paper last week pointed out, we have no idea who these companies are that councillors Dawe, Rae and Vickers are going to attract to Horsham.

Young people in Horsham need to be able to find and buy/rent one and two bedroomed accommodation, preferably near to transport, not stuck on the periphery of a town. Developers will build as few houses/flats to meet this need as they can get away with, since it is ‘executive’ homes that are more profitable.

Why can’t this site be used for mixed affordable housing?
