LETTER: Issues with route claims

In the article on the Arundel bypass (Thursday, March 9), Arundel mayor James Stewart is quoted as saying, in support of the pink-blue dual carriageway route: 'It is the shortest route, requiring the minimum amount of road.'

This is not correct. The purple route, from an improved Crossbush junction to Ford roundabout, would be shortest.

He said: “It does not go through any villages...” The route goes through Tortington village with a split-level junction, with slip roads, at Ford Road, and would sever links with Arundel town. Tortington is part of Arundel parish.

He also said it would ‘not go through ancient woodland’. Tortington Common is defined as ancient woodland in the Sussex Biodiversity Records Centre at Sussex Wildlife Trust.

The route would go through important wildlife habitat for dormice and bats.

He also says that the pink-blue route is needed to reduce pollution, but the Highways England feasibility study of 2015 states that this route will not reduce pollution in the town.

It is a huge concern that such inaccurate facts are being used by the mayor of Arundel to advocate what he thinks is the best option for Arundel and its surrounding area.
