LETTER: Lack of planned hospital services

I am writing to express my concerns over the lack of planned additional hospital services in the Surrey and Sussex healthcare area when taking into account the proposed massive increase in new housing and population in the area over the next 15 years.

We still only have one major NHS hospital covering emergency and non-emergency services to the residents of East Surrey, North East West Sussex and South Croydon, including major towns of Crawley, Horsham, Reigate and Redhill, covering a growing population of 550,000 upwards.

Around Basingstoke in Hampshire they are also having to accommodate new housing on a large scale. North Hampshire Hospital serves a population of 600,000, Basingstoke, Winchester, Andover and surrounding areas in Hampshire and West Berkshire.

As reported in the Basingstoke Gazette on 20th October planning permission has been submitted for a brand new Critical Care Hospital with emergency treatment and a cancer centre. Medical practitioners are supporting this state of the art facility, as are clinical commissioning group councils. This despite being only a few miles away from Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital.

Why is this not happening in this area?

Why did our medical practitioners not support a new hospital? Were they aware at the time of the amount of additional housing planned for this area?

Having been a regular visitor within the last few years to East Surrey Hospital, the hospital is struggling to cope with the population as it is, let alone with a growing population.

This has to be addressed, for the benefit of all.
