LETTER: Legislation to curb food speculation

Two years ago you gave generous publicity to a meeting we had with a local MEP to urge him to support moves in the European Parliament aimed at curbing the activities of big banks' speculation on food prices.

Such activity makes a large contribution to the sharp rises in food prices in the UK and around the world, driving millions of people into poverty and hunger.

We write to say we are delighted that European legislation to stop banks gambling on hunger has finally been agreed.

The World Development Movement continues to be concerned about the activities of banks, and a current campaign draws attention to the fact that the UK finance sector, headquartered in the City of London, is bankrolling climate change by funding destructive fossil fuel projects.

At recent meeting we watched a film showing the horrifying effects mining is having on communities in Indonesia.
