LETTER: Leisure centre plans too vague

I read the articles about the re-development of Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre in the County Times with great interest and have also visited the leisure centre to look at the plans.

I think that it is impossible for the public to make an informed decision over which option is best as it does not state where the funding is coming from or where the running track is to be located.

In plans released last year the current location of the running track was to be sold off and turned into further housing and the track was to be relocated onto Tanbridge House School land. Is this still the case?

I am a resident of Pines Ridge and back the area of land where the track was to be located according to last year’s plans. Residents of Pines Ridge made an objection to this and met with a council representative to air our views.

We have not heard anything since. By leaving this part of the proposal vague it leaves the entire plans vague.

There are now three roads, Pines Ridge, Farthings Walk and the new Harrington Mews that back the field where the running track may go to, and the council and general public should consider the impact on these residents of having a track in use until 10pm with noise pollution, floodlighting pouring into bedrooms where children are sleeping as well as the security aspect of general public being able to see directly into the rear of our properties.

Personally I feel that the running track should stay where it is but then it concerns me as to where the funding is coming from?

I also agree with the 2014 Commonwealth bronze medallist Jade Lally who trains there that it is a great shame that the ‘Tube’ - an indoor facility that includes a 60m straight for running, pole vault, long jump and high jump - will not be included.

It seems to me looking at the plans that the leisure centre would also lose the outdoor courts in the new proposal which nobody has mentioned.

I strongly feel that the facility should provide ‘like for like’ and should provide all of the facilities that are currently on offer plus more, not take things away from the public - so perhaps back to the drawing board?

Without knowing where the funding is coming from or the arrangements for the running track I do not see how anyone can make an informed decision, and would suggest that the council is being very clever by not putting this information in its proposal.

Until this is made clear I would suggest that the plans as they stand are too vague and should be made ‘null and void’.
