LETTER: Local plan ignored

Ever more housing sites are reported, all unplanned, all failing to solve the shortage of low cost premises.

What is being built satisfy people moving into our already unplanned communities who have produced local plans which in their hidebound wisdom our councils appear to be ignoring as they also do for any services required or where the work places are.

Values at risk

We are told that ours is the oldest parliamentary democracy in the world, and there is much talk of our British belief in fair play. Yet with the Trade Union Bill, this Government are intentionally putting these values at risk. We’ve already seen them make it harder to register to vote, and they have already tried to redraw the Parliamentary map in a way that only benefits the Conservative Party.

Now, they are trying to hide measures in the Trade Union Bill that are deliberately designed to cut off trade unions’ financial support for the Labour Party - while doing nothing to limit the hedge funds and millionaires that support their own party. This is an attempt to silence any opposition, whether it’s from unions, campaigners, or charities; and to change the rules to make it harder for anyone else to win an election. As the House of Lords debate the Bill over the next weeks, I can only hope the Government will take the opportunity to embody the values of democracy and decency they claim to support, and drop these unfair proposals.
