LETTER: Making West Sussex greener

From the start of April, our residents have been able to recycle more household plastic containers than ever before.

I was delighted to hear this news. Increasing recycling in West Sussex is extremely important to me, and we know our residents also care about this issue which is why we, along with our partners at district and borough councils and Viridor Waste Management, our recycling contractor, have been working hard to introduce this service.

Recycling these items could see more than 4,000 tonnes added to the county’s recycling rate every year.

That’s a lot of plastic which can be transformed into lots of different things including clothes, toys, kitchen utensils, pens and even garden furniture!

We’ll be collecting household plastic pots, tubs and trays – as well as plastic bottles.

This new service came just in time for Easter so residents were able to recycle almost every element of their Easter egg packaging - the plastic casings, the cardboard boxes and the foil wrappers, although we cannot recycle plastic film or plastic bags.

All we ask is that you continue to make sure that your recycling – all of your recycling – is clean, dry and loose.
