LETTER: Nobody to blame but ourselves

Over the next five to ten years as we see our villages and small market towns double and treble in size with our green fields and woodlands disappearing under bricks, solar panels and enormous bird slaying wind turbines, we will have nobody to blame but ourselves.

When we wonder what happened to our rural, village, community spirit with no-one interested in helping on parish councils or residents’ associations while our old and vulnerable are left cold, alone and despairing, we will have nobody to blame but ourselves.

As West Sussex slowly becomes a desolate, spiritless and empty commuter belt with sardine tin trains running on time occasionally and you and I sit in traffic jams beside sanctimonious signs telling us to turn our engines off to cut emissions, because signs are cheaper than improving our infrastructure, we will have nobody to blame but ourselves.

When we are thinking of moving away because our children’s commute to school is longer than our commute to work, when we cannot get a doctor’s appointment for weeks and we wonder what happened to our quality of life, we have will have nobody to blame but ourselves.

This election was one of the most highly publicised, discussed and with the most potential for change for years - and postal voting so easy it is, apparently, open to abuse - yet more than one in four voters didn’t care enough to vote.

Of the people who did bother to vote a large swathe voted as their parents voted, as they have always voted, for parties their parents would not recognise.

While a lot of people disillusioned with the status quo were swayed by fear; fear of change and fear of a red tartan Ed coalition, to vote for the diminishing status quo. We cannot point the finger at arrogant, condescending out of touch politicians, we have nobody to blame but ourselves. We have voted, or not voted, for our own future.

We have not changed anything. We will still have Government ministers who do not see why our national parks and areas of outstanding beauty should be preserved from bricks and mortar.

We will still have local councillors doing their Westminster master’s bidding in secret committee meetings. We will still have, as ‘true blue’ safe seats, our mad swivel eyed loons (voters with opinions) ridiculed and ignored.

We must blame ourselves as we have no-one else to blame. Welcome to our world. Welcome to our future.
