LETTER: Only one route is acceptable

In the edition of your paper on Thursday, March 23, you asked people to express their opinions on the proposed A27 bypass at Arundel. Here is mine.

The existing A27 relief road – it is not, in fact, a bypass – which runs through the outer part of the town, is not capable of handling even the existing amount of traffic which uses it. It is already a bottleneck.

It produces an unacceptable amount of air pollution and noise pollution, particularly for those who live near to it.

This is especially true at rush hours.

In the evening rush hour the road is so congested that traffic coming from the west is virtually, often actually, at a standstill.

When the traffic is not moving, but with the engines running, it is now known that this produces levels of pollution which are extremely dangerous to health.

At this time many motorists turn off at the Ford Road roundabout and take a detour up Maltravers Street and down the High Street, rejoining the A27 at the roundabout near the station, turning the centre of Arundel into a rat run and causing even more pollution and congestion.

Whatever happens, we need a solution to this problem as soon as possible and whatever solution is found must not run through Arundel.

If it does we will still be plagued with unacceptable levels of pollution and congestion.

At the moment the proposed route of the new bypass, which goes outside the town, is the pink/blue route. It is the only acceptable proposal which is on the table at present.
