LETTER: Planning stinks

I can’t quite believe the incompetence of our planning department.

The recent air crash and the necessary diversions onto the A259 Brighton Road have given us, in my view, a glimpse of the future in terms of traffic jams and tailbacks. Let me explain.

The planners have already allowed so many developments on Shoreham Beach that as all the traffic swarms onto the only exit from there – a little roundabout.

It is then joined by all the traffic coming from Worthing and Lancing with tailbacks to the Lancing broadway and beyond, sometimes in one direction and jams all the way to Shoreham to the little Ropetackle roundabout.

It’s a permanent traffic jam with bad air pollution for the people of Shoreham.

Now we’re a going to have a Waitrose supermarket plus 132 luxury flats (as if the country needs any more luxury flats) pulling customers into Shoreham along the narrow Brighton Road.

Then further along a Lidl supermarket pulling customers into Shoreham along the narrow Brighton Road.

It is madness.

And please don’t say ‘get on ya bike’, although many people have taken to their bikes in spite of the air pollution.

But some of us can’t with small grandchildren, buggies and all the equipment – it’s not an option.

Why on earth did the planning department think we needed more supermarkets in this area?

There’s a Lidl and a Waitrose in Worthing, not exactly far away.

There’s Holmbush with Tesco and M&S nearby on a road that can actually take the traffic supermarkets attract, and there’s Lyons Farm with Sainsbury’s – another traffic jam area, I know.

I would suggest that having two more supermarkets on the tiny Lower Brighton Road is ludicrous non-planning, especially as, with the railway behind, there’s no escape for non-supermarket traffic until either the Dunelm level crossing or way down the road under the bridge where Shoreham College is.

Then there is the traffic for the municipal refuse dump. Am I exaggerating? I don’t think so.

Who are these people who allowed this situation to happen?

Let them come out and show themselves and tell us why they agreed to all these planning applications when they knew what it would do to the town.

I recently saw that the farmer’s field opposite ‘The Longshore’ had been sold to developers.

Is that to be a Morrison’s or Aldi supermarket?

No matter that we have both of these already within easy reach.
