LETTER: Please do not repeat mistake

I note that no apology was given by Arun District Council (ADC) for the accidental price hike to the car parking charges beside The Windmill.

As a result of this mistake, young families and pensioners attending matinee performances were unfairly penalised. Will the council refund the surcharge on presentation of overcharged parking tickets?

What about the cinema contractor’s loss of income? Will they be reimbursed?

Films generally last a little over two hours, so three hours’ parking is required to avoid a fine.

Film-goers are prepared to pay £3, but certainly not £7. Before the present operatives took over, ADC had decided to close The Windmill due to the heavy losses incurred.

As a result of two marches and a petition by local residents, supported by Littlehampton’s Civic Society and the newly-formed Windmill Supporters’ Club, the council was persuaded to seek another sub-contractor.

They have been in charge now for over three years providing the latest films and special live performances of ballet, opera, concerts and theatre. The Windmill now operates at a profit for ADC and supports local amateur dramatics, musical societies, orchestras and dance groups.

Volunteers freely give up their time to support both the cinema and theatre. The Windmill is a profitable asset for the community.

I find it very disappointing that this mistake has occurred again. It was about this time last year that the same error was made by ADC. I feel that, at the very least, ADC should apologise and undertake to ensure no more repeats of this mistake.
