LETTER: Precious habitat for nature is lost

I am writing concerning an area of land that was a habitat of bramble, long grass and many wild flowers for years (including the tufted purple vetch which isn’t very common) to the side of Oaklands Close, off Brighton Road, Horsham.

It has a public footpath running alongside it. It was a busy place with pollinating insects, butterflies, birds and was also a cover for wild animals.

It has recently been mown down into a desert of grass stubble, possibly at public expense. Time, energy and fuel has been used unnecessarily. Precious habitat for nature to thrive has been lost for no good reason.

When are we going to learn to leave nature alone wherever we are able to?

As this habitat is now destroyed would anyone be interested in giving something back by planting an orchard that would benefit both wildlife and residents?
