LETTER: Regret at store’s move from centre

Quite a lot of people have said to me how sorry they are that Waitrose has left the town!

It was a pleasant, not too large, supermarket easily reached in its central position with an excellent range of products and a friendly, helpful staff - so much nicer than the out-of-town enormous and unfriendly sheds.

When I came to Horsham in 1940 there was a large number of grocery shops from which to choose (although your purchases were largely governed by your ration book) with International, Home & Colonial, Maypole, Liptons, David Greig, etc.

Now we only have Marks & Spencer’s in the town centre. At a time when we are encouraged to exercise, we are now persuaded to drive to out-of-town sites with the added cost of petrol and parking.

Many senior persons in particular found that Waitrose in the town centre was in easy walking distance for them and were sad to see them go. Everyone is hoping to see either Aldi or Lidl take up this site soon - before it becomes another restaurant.
