LETTER: Road changes must be priority

The vote taken at the meeting on Thursday 19th November 2015 of the Horsham District Council leading to the adoption of its North Horsham development plan represents a considerable milestone in the future development of Horsham town.

Events from this decision will quickly follow starting with the long delayed outline planning application for the entire designated area by Liberty Property Trust and there would seem little doubt now that this scheme will be permitted.

Judging from their comments in the past, which were quoted in your columns, Liberty expect that shovels in the ground could realistically start sometime during late summer 2016.

It has also been hinted in your columns during this very long dispute as to the feasibility or otherwise of the entire Plan that the Horsham Society - when faced with the inevitable - might surface and move forward to be engaged in meaningful discussions with Liberty as undoubtedly the society has much collective wisdom to offer for the future good of Horsham .

But as for the actual residents here in North Horsham who will suffer the most dislocation as building progresses it is fair to say that some are opposed to virgin green fields being replaced with tarmacadam-per se.

However on the vexatious subject of traffic density and road connectivity within the scheme residents of Langhurstwood Road have absolutely no doubts about supporting the intention that the existing road should be blocked coupled with the building of a new road northeastwards to join the new arterial system.

The laudatory plan for the slowing down by traffic lights of the very fast moving traffic between the stretch of the A264 from the Great Daux to Rusper roundabouts is within an area where there have been several crashes and - very recently - a fatality.

Therefore the Langhurstwood Road Residents’ Association will lobby for such changes to be given much greater importance and should be brought forward to Phase 1 of the Liberty plan and other connectivity issues which do not appear to have been publicly raised so far, namely the reopening of Warnham Railway Station by an automatic barrier - thus facilitating a most important western access to the A24.

Such a change is bound to relieve blockages at the Great Daux junction during peak times.
