LETTER: Sad that Peace Garden ransacked

During Horsham’s Circle of Life Festival, a group led by Sue Djabri took part in a guided tour that began at Horsham Museum and proceeded down the Causeway.

The walk continued through St Mary’s church yard and around the old Denne Road Cemetery into the Peace Garden as Sue recalled the rich history and intrigue that surrounds us.

On reaching the Peace Garden, One Spirit Interfaith Minister, Jacqueline Clark, created a sacred space where she led a unique ceremony that honoured our ancestors, both past, and, the yet unborn. Jacqueline created a beautiful place of remembrance with fresh flowers, rice paper butterflies, rose petals, hearts and stars.

The Peace garden situated in the old Cemetery was originally created in memory of the Allies help and involvement during the Second World War. The original trees and plants were donated, and represented each country involved.

The Horsham Interfaith group, more recently planted Cherry Trees; one was stolen but has since been replaced by a Peace Pole. There will be a gathering in the Peace Garden on August 6th 2015, to honour the memory of the thousands of people who died on August 6th 1945 in Hiroshima and the on-going hardship that has resulted.

How sad I was to receive the following email a few days after Jacqueline’s beautiful ceremony from Denise Walker, editor of The Funeral Service Journal who covered the event on behalf of the magazine:

‘It was a beautiful service, I loved it. I took my mum and husband up there on Monday to show them around. The peace garden had been ransacked by a group of teenagers and there were lolly sticks crisp packets and rubbish everywhere so we cleared it all up again.’ Denise Walker.
