LETTER: Small pleasures

With the constant outpouring of bad news, through newspapers, television and the internet, it is so easy to slip into despondency, at the state of the world and our place in its future, during the long grey days of winter.

Then the sun comes out and lights up the emerging spring flowers, planted by the borough council, Let’s Face It, and by so many of Crawley’s residents. Every colour and variety brings new life and vitality, to our grassy banks, verges and green spaces, all over the town. Bringing a promise of new beginnings and a fresh start to the new year. I go into the town centre, amid all the chaos, dust and noise from workmen, fences and heavy machinery, but with the sure knowledge that by high summer we will be well on the way to a transformed, modern, communal and invigorated space, that proves that Crawley is living up to its motto, “I grow and I rejoice”. A fitting monument to Crawley’s seventieth year. Crawley has undergone so many changes over the decades, it is good to see us building on our legacy of developing and responding to the changing needs of all our residents, into the future.

I watch with interest the work going on to refurbish the adventure playground at Cherry lane. Started by Phil and other volunteers, back in the 60s/70s, it has provided fun and outdoor space for generations of young people. My own children and grandchildren have fond memories, of constructing and building, coming home with splinters and torn trousers. Now it will reopen with all new equipment and facilities and I look forward to seeing it filled, in the summer, with children and their families, enjoying fresh air and freedom.

I also wait with bated breath to know whether our county council will at long last promote and fund, the long demanded and argued for parking audit, for Crawley, so desperately needed, to address some of the real issues, faced every day by our residents. But it it is the small pleasures of life, enjoyed with family and friends, out in our lovely green spaces, parks and gardens, of Crawley, that make living in this, ever more complex and difficult world, bearable.
