LETTER: Third compromise for bowls club

Some wit commented ‘Compromise - is the art of dividing a cake in such a way that everyone believes he has the biggest slice’.

Sports England state that indoor bowls centres are core facilities. There is no ambiguity or compromise with that statement. They are really acknowledging that bowls is not just a passing fad but a way of life for many people.

Bowls has been in existence in some shape or form since at least the 13th century. It has developed immensely since then.

Its popularity reached such a high that King Henry VIII banned it as it was deviating the people from practising the longbow.

However that met its ‘Agincourt’ as by the time of King James I (well done Jimmy) the people showed their two fingers at that proclamation and reinstated the game. Since then it is now played in over 40 countries and was even part of the Commonwealth Games.

Horsham council now want to fly in the face of all that and offer a compromise and a gesture.

They will compromise by accepting, I guess, a further £100,000 for the use of the club’s existing premises for a further two years and after that will ‘consider’ compromising with a few rinks with shared facilities for occasional use.

Now that is what I call a compromise!!!!!!! (one slice or two?).

Now please Horsham council listen to your conscience. You must have principles. Remember the words of my mentor and great life commentator and philosopher, Groucho Marx, ‘Those are my principles, and if you don’t like them... well I have others.’
