LETTER: Toxic relationship with populace

It was refreshing to read last week’s editorial about the happy outcome of the collaboration between West Sussex County Council, local residents in Barns Green and Berkeley Homes.

Described by villagers as a ‘victory for localism’, the resulting brand new primary school for the village was a vindication of the willing and open co-operation of all those concerned.

Compare and contrast this with the acrimonious relationship between Horsham District Council with its ill-famed Local Development Plan, American developer Liberty Property Trust lurking in the background and thousands of Horsham District residents.

Clearly the secrecy surrounding decisions being made behind closed doors by the council leadership and its unwillingness to share information with the public has something to do with the toxic relationship that now exists between HDC and the local populace.

One has only to take a look at this paper’s letters pages each week to realise there’s something dreadfully wrong with the district council’s handling of plans for future development in the area.

Perhaps they should take a leaf out of Barns Green’s book and see if they can’t bring about a sea change and do better in the future.

Wouldn’t it be nice if residents could put their trust in their local council once more? Hang on… I think I just saw something pink and pig-like flying by my window.
