LETTER: Valuable hospital

In common with many, I am sure, I was appalled to read the letter from councillor Ken Bishop about the demolition of Southlands Harness Block.

Firstly, Adur residents (not only those in Shoreham) will sacrifice a valuable and highly-regarded hospital in order that our local council can appease their political masters in Westminster by achieving their “targets” in providing more and more housing.

What both the local and Westminster politicians fail to comprehend when increasing the housing market, is to ensure that there are sufficient supporting services – education, healthcare, GPs and hospital services – all of which, in the case of Adur, are in short supply, as is well documented in the media.

Just one simple example – the majority of orthopaedic operations are now carried out in St Richards, Chichester, with a few patients being fortunate enough to use the facilities in Goring Hall.

Another being a drastic shortage of community beds.

As for jubilation of the Crown Road, Shoreham, residents quoted by Kern Bishop in his letter, one can only be thankful that they appear to be in the best of health and are in no need of hospital treatment.

When that sad day comes when such need is required, they will then, I am sure, change their minds in common with the numerous patients currently suffering as a result of the diminution of hospital services in our area.

Perhaps Ken Bishop and his political colleagues should be reminded that they represent the needs and wishes of their constituents first and foremost, not the political party who supports them.
