One of the most effective defences that a city used to have was stone walls around its perimeters. Without those walls, anyone who wanted to invade could just march right in and create devastation.

With them, a city was more secure and they afforded a visual advantage to those who kept watch.

The way we watch over ourselves is not dissimilar. When we fail to practice self-control, we leave ourselves wide open to things that we may not want to become a part of us. If we allow ourselves to do just one thing that we know we shouldn’t, we let our walls down and it becomes easier to let one more thing slide, then another …
