LETTER: We have much to give thanks for

As we enter into the beautiful season of autumn with the changing colours of the trees bringing about a ‘rainbow’ effect all around us, we here in Horsham are reminded, if indeed we need reminding, what a privilege it is to live in such an environment with so much green space (at least for now!) and tree-lined avenues and so much more.

We live in an area for which we have much to give thanks for! Our environment is precious and we are called to do all we can to protect it while also taking the good it offers us.

Whether we agree or disagree on the issue of climate change we are called to live in this created world which we are part and care for it. We human beings are the only created element in the whole system which can irrevocably destroy this magnificent world in which we live.

Whether it be through the destruction with weapons of unbelievable power, as we see all too often on our television screens and those which we pray will never be used, or through our misuse of what has been made available to us to share for the good of all through thoughtlessness or greed, mankind has the ability to harm.

For the good of mankind, we ‘Horshamites’ and those in similar situations to ourselves who have been blessed with good fortune, have an even greater responsibility to care for our creation, humankind and all other kind. As we are told in Genesis, the first book of the Bible, God ‘created man in his own image and gave him dominion over the earth, to care for it and till it’.
