LETTER: Why leave gap?

If the River Arun wall was to protect Littlehampton from flooding, why was a gap left near the site of Riverside Autos?

It seems to me that if a wall was intended to save Littlehampton, no dispute should be allowed to defeat this objective.

Why was a gap left, which the environment authority had to shore up, which cost a lot of money, when there was a chance of flooding?

I expect the taxpayer will have to pay in the end.
