Link Road will notbring regeneration

WE don't have to wait for the Department for Transport to announce funding for the Bexhill-Hastings road link the county council (ESCC) has said it intends to build it in any event.

The 3.5 mile link road will cost more than £100 of OUR money and when the good people of Bexhill are told there is no money for schools, hospitals, nurseries, day care, home helps and libraries, they will know where their money has gone.

They should also be prepared: as part of the link road package will come 3,100 new homes in north Bexhill and 2,000 in Hastings, together with more business parks and factories and an estimated 39,000 cars a day. Traffic on the A259 will therefore increase, not decrease. Bexhill as we know it now will be unrecognisable.

I did not realise ESCC had the legal power to ‘override’ the Secretary of State for Transport and take this decision on its own. Why do we vote if ESCC can do just what it wants?

The council has said the link road is needed to regenerate Hastings, but building more roads has never been the answer and ESCC’s own expert witness on economics stated at the November 2009 public inquiry: “roads don’t make jobs”.Hastings will never be re-generated until the A21 is improved.

ESCC should come clean - it needs the road to release the green fields to build houses and factories. This is a tragedy for Bexhill, the beautiful Combe Haven valley which will be destroyed and future generations who will lose the countryside which is there for all to enjoy.

Is this what the people of Bexhill really want?

Hastings Alliance has organised a “Rally in the Valley” at Bynes Farm, Crowhurst, tomorrow, Saturday, at 3pm to oppose the link road. For further details, call 01424 830374.
